History The Frazier Alumni Pavilion and Plaza has become a fixture on the campus for pre-game parties and private events. The Texas Tech Alumni Association built the pavilion in 1998 at the southwest corner of Jones SBC Stadium for alumni and their families or guests to meet and mingle before home football games.
The Spanish-style building was designed by Lubbock designers H. Dean Pearce and Joe McKay. Amenities include a large assembly room, a fireplace, entertainment stage and catering kitchen.
Jim Sowell, then chairman of the Texas Tech Board of Regents, presented the idea for the structure at a homecoming meeting in 1996. Sowell, who pledged $200,000 toward the structure, challenged the regents to construct a pre-game reception area where alumni could gather before football games. It was a natural fit because the TTAA has always sponsored pre-game festivities.
With the initial funding in place, the association began looking for additional benefactors. That's when the plan was introduced to David Frazier, a 1972 Texas Tech graduate. Frazier committed $475,000 toward the facility and an additional $350,000 for the plaza area.
The pavilion provides an additional presence for the association because of its location. It increases the association's exposure to large audiences on game days as well as throughout the year because the venue is popular for many other events.
Initially thought of as a pre-game meeting place, it has become much more. Demand for the facility far exceeds the expectations of the association. Seminars, weddings, banquets, career fairs and proms are some of the events held in the pavilion.
