Facilities
Merket Alumni Center

When Merket Alumni Center opened in April 1995, it was heralded as an
architectural work of stunningly understated beauty, elegance and class.
Since then it has served as the campus home of Texas Tech University alumni
and students as they gather for banquets, awards and ring ceremonies,
meetings, receptions, weddings and more.

To meet the growing needs of this beautiful facility, you are invited to
make a tax-deductible contribution to the Peggy and Bill Dean Expansion to
Merket Alumni Center, a project that will add 10,694 square feet of space.

History
The President's Residence was one of the original structures built on campus in 1924. From 1925 until 1959, it was the location of high teas, student and faculty receptions and formal dinner parties hosted by the college's first six presidents.

The Alumni Association began occupying the former President's home in 1969. As administrative needs have continually increased, so has the obvious shortage of existing space for office personnel and staff.

Texas Tech did not have an easily identifiable alumni center. There was no "gathering place" where social functions and business meetings could be held. There was no location where the volunteer workers who serve the association and the university could hold meetings.

The National Board of the association and the Board of Regents of Texas Tech commissioned an architect, Bill Adling and Associates of Lubbock, to develop a plan for remodeling and expanding the Alumni Association building. H. Deane Pierce of Lubbock was the interior designer, and Lee Lewis Construction, Inc., was awarded the construction contract.

In 1992, a campaign was launched to raise the necessary funding to restore the existing building and expand the facility to include additional office space and a conference center. The integrity of the original Spanish Mission architectural design has been maintained throughout.

During the campaign, Gerald and Louise Merket, ex-students from Tyler, Texas, made a generous gift which resulted in naming the facility the Merket Alumni Center. The Alumni Association is very grateful to the Merkets for making it possible to proceed with the project.

The Merket Alumni Center is truly a showcase facility which includes five different areas available for use by groups and organizations. The banquet hall may be divided into three sections; the alumni lounge is suitable for small gatherings; the outdoor courtyard makes an elegant area for receptions, weddings and other functions; and the conference room offers a lovely setting for small luncheons, brunches, meetings or other events.
