2012 Masters Tournament Trip: Bucket List Realized

Written by: Brent Ross, Vice President of Marketing

As a lifelong golf fan, attending The Masters has always been one of those items high on my sports bucket list. I’m elated to say that I have now crossed The Masters off my list.

I was lucky enough to have the chance to attend the Tuesday and Wednesday practice rounds of the 2012 Masters golf tournament. I was there to learn more about the accommodations and great perks the winners of the Texas Tech Alumni Association Masters Golf Raffle get to enjoy.

Having never been to Augusta National Golf Club, we spent Tuesday just walking the course and taking it all in. What a magnificent location for a golf course and what a great golf course. There was not one blemish on the entire course. The fairways looked like carpet and the greens were immaculate. You don’t get green grass like that in Lubbock!

Two things I have always heard about Augusta National is that TV doesn’t do justice to the course’s elevation changes or to the close proximity of greens to the next tee box. Now having seen it in person, I would wholeheartedly agree with this. Walking the course is a workout for the patrons – I can’t imagine doing it with the pressure of having to hit shots to win a major title. And many times, the next tee box is just a matter of a few steps from the green.

Another thing we had the chance to see on Tuesday was the tradition of players skipping the ball across the pond on Hole 16. During the practice rounds, players will hit their normal tee shots on the par-3 16th. As they walk to the green, the players stop short of the pond and try to hit shots and skip them across the water and onto the green. You can hear the patrons’ cheers for these efforts all over the course.

After having a great day on the course, we retired to the hospitality house that the TTAA Masters Golf Raffle winner gets access to. What a great place. The two-story Magnolia Manor is a great place to start and finish your days at The Masters. You’re treated like a VIP from the time you have your car valet parked to the time you get to feast on a buffet of fine food and drinks. The staff is great and there to help you with anything you need.

After winding down at the Magnolia Manor, we headed to our Executive Home for the night. We stayed in a gated community where several residents rent out their homes for the Masters week. The accommodations at the home were excellent and certainly better than a hotel.

Wednesday at The Masters consists of the final practice rounds for the players as well as the famed Par-3 Tournament. This exhibition is great because former Masters champions join current players in a very laid-back atmosphere. It was also a blast to see the kids and grandkids caddy for their dads and granddads.

A spring thunderstorm cut the Par-3 Tournament and our stay on Augusta National a little short. However, the two days we spent on one of the world’s greatest golf courses will never be forgotten. It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime trip that every golf fan should make.
