Red Raiders Battle Bears in Independence Bowl

After finishing the regular season 6-6, the Texas Tech football team has accepted an invitation to take on Cal in the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl on Dec. 16 in Shreveport, Louisiana.

This will be the 41st time in program history the Red Raiders have played in a bowl game and their first time playing in the Independence Bowl since 1998. This will be just the second meeting against Cal all-time. The last was also in a bowl game in 2004, when the Red Raiders took down the Bears in the Holiday Bowl.

"On behalf of our entire program, we are excited to face a talented Cal program in the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl," head coach Joey McGuire said. "This will be a tremendous opportunity for many of our players to play in one of the nation's longest-running bowl games. We look forward to the trip to Shreveport and the opportunity to play in front of Red Raider Nation one last time this season."

Tech ended the season on a loss, but won the other three games it played in November, beating TCU, #16 Kansas and UCF to become eligible for a bowl. The Red Raiders had 18 players honored with various All-Big 12 Conference awards after the regular season, including All-Conference First Team selections Tahj Brooks and Austin McNamara.

Cal also finished the season 6-6, becoming bowl eligible in the last game of the regular season with a 33-7 win over UCLA. The Golden Bears won their final three games of the regular season to get to 6-6.

The Red Raiders and Golden Bears do have one common opponent this year in Oregon. Tech fell to Oregon 38-30 in the second game of the season, while Cal dropped their Nov. 4 matchup with the Ducks 63-19.
