Texas Tech Alumna Vies for Mrs. United States Crown

By Jennifer Ritz

Check out the 2012 Mrs. United States Pageant July 12 in Las Vegas! Texas Tech’s own Lacey Waldrep Pruett, (BA ’99 Journalism and English), is competing as Mrs. Texas.

“I feel there’s much to gain from pageant competition, and with the right support and mindset, pushing one's limits can create new opportunities for participants,” Pruett says. “Win or lose, the investment in improving communication skills, poise under pressure, and opportunities to positively impact charitable organizations, makes pageant competition one of the best activities for women.”

Pruett notes that Texas Tech played a role in her current success.

“Pageant competition serves as an extension of the communications studies I received from Texas Tech University. I still use the skills I perfected within the Mass Communications building (College of Mass Communications) in my career and with my pageant involvement."

The delegates will compete in swimsuit, evening gown and interview competitions. The week-long event will celebrate good morals, physical fitness, communication skills, social awareness and community involvement of married women in America.

Pruett is manager of employee outreach for Southwest Airlines. She is also a group fitness instructor and freelance writer and competes in endurance events. She is training for the Nike Women’s Marathon on Oct. 14.
