Collective Cultures Collide in an Original Texas Tech Musical Production.
"Dancing at the Crossroads: A Celebration of Anglo-Celtic and African-American Dance in the New World” will premiere Feb. 1-2 and 8-9 at the Christine DeVitt Icehouse Theater on the LHUCA campus, located at 511 Ave. J. Christopher J. Smith, the director of the university’s Vernacular Music Center, said singers, players, dancers and storytellers will present a fully staged dance/theater narrative relating the mythic history of the encounter of these two great vernacular performance traditions in the New World, which includes blues, jazz, hip-hop, New Orleans, Irish, English, Scottish and Caribbean music and dance.

The Digital Resources Library received a $53,000 grant from the Hoblitzelle Foundation for a new microfilm scanner in December. The scanner will allow university-owned microfilm to be scanned into searchable PDFs.

Texas Tech Sports Network (Learfield Sports) has added two members to its Red Raider baseball radio broadcast team as Brian Hanni has been named the radio play-by-play voice of Red Raider baseball and Texas Tech alumnus Jamie Lent will join Mike Gustafson as a color analyst for the 2013 season.

The Texas Tech baseball program will host its fourth annual alumni baseball game and FirstBank & Trust First Pitch Dinner on January 26. The alumni game, scheduled for 1 p.m. at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park, will feature the 2013 Red Raiders against former Red Raiders who played Major League Baseball and numerous current minor league players.

Law Dean Emeritus Walter Huffman Appointed to National Defense Board
Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta has appointed Walter Huffman, Texas Tech University School of Law dean emeritus, current Texas Tech law professor and recipient of the 2012 Texas Tech Alumni Association Lauro F. Cavazos Award to the newly formed Defense Legal Policy Board. The 12-member board was created to address significant legal issues that have raised concern during the multiple missions U.S. Armed Forces have undertaken since 2001.

Alumna Susan Graham Honored for Extraordinary Contributions to the World of Opera

The Merola Opera Program presented mezzo-soprano Susan Graham with the Merola Distinguished Alumni Award at a private reception on Saturday, July 14th. The award, which has only been given out six times in the program’s 54 year history, is given to recognize extraordinary contributions to the world of opera by graduates of the Merola Opera Program.

Born in New Mexico and raised in Texas, Susan Graham studied at Texas Tech University and received the 2001 Distinguished Alumni Award — the highest honor bestowed by the Texas Tech Alumni Association and the University.
